There’s a company in Louisville, Kentucky that designs, manufactures, and services Heat Recovery Steam Generators, or HRSGs. Basically, HRSGs increase energy efficiency by capturing the hot exhaust from a gas turbine and turning it in to steam that can be used to power another turbine.
The Kentucky-based company imports parts for its HRSGs from Thailand under GSP, savings tariffs of 3.5 – 4.3 percent. American companies also import steam generator parts from India, Indonesia, and the Philippines, and more than 99 percent of the imports from those countries faced no tariffs in 2009/2010 because of GSP.
A price break of a couple percent might not sound like much, but with about $100 million worth of generator parts purchased from GSP countries during that time period, savings exceeded $4 million.
